A few months ago, Rani Mukharjee was asked by a fan whether a woman should wear a transparent saree below the navel or above the navel and she refused to answer that question.

I have no idea what would her answer have been. Does anybody have a clue or has she given any hints? I wished the Rani of Sarees would give some sign, or suggestion or advice or glimmer or allude to or something! I wonder! We mere mortals are left to figure it out by our own self…

Just kidding, she has given clear directions in above saree, and the directions are all pointing towards the south of the navel.

  1. The “above-or-below-navel” question is rarely about aesthetics. It’s almost always shrouded in outdated, Victorian morality. The implication is clear - wear it below the navel, and you’re… umm, loose. Rani’s answer should’ve been, “a woman should wear it where she damn well pleases!”. From a purely aesthetic stand point, I’ve yet to see a heavy saree worn below the navel work well. Happy to be proven wrong, of course.

  2. […] navel saris. Our demure Ms. Mukherji? No way we thought. And then we found a picture of her in a low-low red chiffon sari. Then she got an honorable mention on our sexy sari navel awards. And now here’s a picture of […]

  3. The whole saree culture of today should be ashamed. It is More skin/less saree. Since some people leave nothing to the imagination today and wear a choli without a brazier even. I won’t be surprised to see women wearing two bandaids and no choli in the very near future. I am surprised that people haven’t shortened the saree & petticoats themselves as well. Vogue 2015 “New Mini Sarees” “only cover your bottom and have legs freely open”. Come on people have a little modesty.
