Saree Dreams

The idea of using skin colored fabric to cover more and give the illusion of showing skin is not new and I generally don’t mind it, especially if the color matches with the outfit too.

This is a great example. the blouse design could have been just the strings of crystal strings but by including the skin colored fabric, she achieved both looks. and the fact that the color goes well with the saree is an extra bonus.

I have seen this employed for faux strapless blouses too.

Satyagraha is an opera in three acts for orchestra, chorus and soloists, composed by Philip Glass, with a libretto by the composer and Constance de Jong. The opera is loosely based on the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi, and is the second part of Glass’s “Portrait Trilogy” of operas about men who changed the world, which also includes Einstein on the Beach and Akhnaten. Philip Glass’s style can broadly be described as minimalist, but the music in Satyagraha is somewhat more expansive than is implied by that label.

The cast of the opera includes 2 sopranos, 2 mezzo-sopranos, 2 tenors, a baritone and 2 basses and a large SATB chorus. The orchestra is strings and woodwinds only, no brass or percussion.

The title of the opera refers to Gandhi’s concept of non-violent resistance to injustice, Satyagraha and the text, from the Bhagavad Gita, is sung in the original Sanskrit. In performance, translation is usually provided in supertitles. As the passages are generally repeated, the DVD provides the full text at the beginning of each scene.

The opera premiers at the MET today and in viewing the snippet, this sari caught my eye.

An interesting full ruffled collar shirt tucked in to a blue saree - today it could pass as a creation of a better designer in India.

You missed the belt, didn’t you! Yup, it holds the saree together, or at least holds the pallu together.

She seems to have bluish eyes; could be Bauch and Lomb’s gift.

Saree vendors have a problem, especially the vendors who prefer to market semi exclusive designs. Once you make a blouse for a saree for a model to wear, the saree can’t be resold easily.

So many of them try to have the saree draped so that blouse is not necessary. Of course, that doesn’t help much because you can’t really evaluate the saree without the blouse; it distorts the look.

Anyway, so that brings us to modeling where the models are mimicking Kelvin Client jeans from eons ago “nothing comes between me and my saree”.

Ok, rant over: it is a pretty saree, weaved motif with sky blue hint works well.

I love this coalescence of black and gold. Intricate blouse, gold booties on black saree and gold and black bangles. Nice.

A reader sent me this drawing and it is interesting for sure. I do remember seeing gorgeous character drawings in Shekhar Kapoor’s Ramayan. I will post pictures from that in the next month or so.
