Is this the most expensive sari ever? Reputed to cost a whopping Rupees 40 lakhs ($100,000) and weigh 8 kilograms (15 lbs), the sari hand woven by Chennai silks is studded with precious stones and pays homage to Raja Ravi Verma’s paintings, including the one called “Lady Musicians” shown in the picture.

No one quite wears a sari the way Rani Mukherji does. She tends to wear bright bold colors that suit her very well. But this blue sari does not do her justice. The heavy embroidered border lacks detail and finesse. And the large and very gaudy necklace does not add to her usual sense of style.
