Hints on design to come for Air India Saree Uniform

ritu_beriRitu Beri has been tapped to design the uniform (including sarees) for Air India.

Here are some hints on the design to come:

“The inspiration for this project comes from the sacred Konark Sun Temple of Puri. This Temple marks a point of achievement in architecture depicting the grace, joy and rhythm of life, all in its wondrous variety. There is an endless wealth of decoration, from intricate patterns to boldly standing sculptures, which is the foundation for the uniforms. The print on these saris will depict wheels and arches of the Temple. The saris and tunics will have sun symbols with rays going in all the directions reflecting the Konark Chakra…..”

The uniforms will include sarees, tunics, scarfs, jackets, coats, aprons and shoes as well as specially designed ties for men in colours of red, orange, black & white.

Can you tell that I am really looking forward to seeing her designs?

Right saree, wrong pleats, worse jewelry

godgil_fashion_saree

Ok, this is exhibit number one why most designers have abandoned heavy jewelry, especially heavy necklaces with their saree collections.

The jewelry looks so out of place. Instead of looking elegant, the outfit looks gaudy.

I like the saree, it is simple and colors are inviting but I am not convinced that it is pleated right. It looks “unmade” and haphazard.

Just image the same model, same saree, sans necklace and perfect pleats. Now that would be beautiful.

You want to see the same mistake repeated in another saree?

Again, lose the necklace, it is not helping, please. It is a gorgeous saree, it doesn’t need any help from gold jewelry.

I know, I know, the fashion show is sponserd by a Jewler, what do you expect? But when would they learn that jewelry is not something that you throw on after the fact; it is something that needs to be integrated in to the outfit.

If sarees are being innovated, the jewelry makers has to innovate with it. Don’t keep offering the same designs that don’t fit in the wardrobe, especially since the gold is $1000/oz.

Yes Virginia, there is such a thing as Contemporary-traditional saree

traditional_saree

Yes, there is such a thing as contemporary traditional sarees. You can’t wear Satya Paul all the time and once you have tasted the contemporary sarees, it is hard to go back to wearing a “traditional” saree that looks the same every year.

This one is a little different; the panoply of colors is very warm and the base maroon accentuates the earthy feel.

Indian General in a saree Uniform

Presenting Lieutenant General Punita Arora.

I am just amazed at this picture, see the decorations on her, and shirt and the use of shoulder stripes to keep the saree tucked in!

As they say “you can make love and war in a saree.”.

Shirly McClain in a beautiful saree.

This must be recent picture. You can tell by looking at the color of the blouse.

Just a few years ago, a blouse which didn’t exactly match with the saree color would have been unheard of.

Gauri Bajoria’s saree

I have seen an uptick in the interest in Gauri Bajoria. Interestingly, we also featured her saree as one of the top saree of 2007.

This a nice, flowing elegant saree. It is subdued and yet glamorous. Gorgeous color combination and the shoes are great as well.

Another look at the Satya Paul Saree “Google”

here is a slightly clearer view of the Google saree from Satya Paul. It was a part of his “pop art” collection.
